How do you handle the fear of SIDS?
Okay, so my four month old decided to sleep through the night literally all night! 9 HOURS! but I couldn't sleep. I kept getting up every hour checking him, wondering why he wasn't waking to eat every 3 hours like he usually does. You would think I would take advantage of the extra sleep and love it but I worried all night! I'm soooo very scared of SIDS to the point that I wake almost every hour and get up to check him. I cannot afford the sleep monitor that checks Your Baby's breathing all night and I've heard they are very touchy anyway and scare you for no reason. As soon as my son goes to bed at night I start thinking about how I couldn't bear life without him and all the bad things that could happen. Any suggestions on how to learn to let go enough to fall asleep?
I completely know where your coming from. Im a first time mom and she's my world. I check on her alot during naps. During the night she sleeps in a cradle in my room so most of the time when I wake I can hear her breath or ill go over and touch her belly. I think its natural at this stage to be concerned. Its nice now because shes 5 months old and I know most SIDS happens between 2 and 4 months. Also I never smoked and dont now, she sleeps on her back (although last night on her side), and we dont have any other risk factors either. Not that it cant happen to us but I try to remember all the things that make her NOT a candidate. Plus I think its 2500 babies a year in USA die from sids. Although I wish it were none thats a small statistic. (even though Im from Canada). Anyways you wont always worry like this about SIDS. Its tough but now that one day you 2 will sleep through the night, or at least most of it.
EDIT: I was reading on Dr. Sears page and I found this question he answered. In there he said that your baby has a 99.9% chance of not dieing of SIDS. Thats great odds. Ill post you a link. I was curious cause our little DD wants to sleep on her side. http://www.askdrsears.com/faq/sl10.asp
