Should Cell Phones be Bannesd in Schools?why or Why Not?
The question as to whether or not cell phones should be banned in schools is very debatable. We went out in the streets in Kingston and interviewed persons of all ages to see what was their view on this issue.
MRS. WILSON(36 years old)-High school's 9th grade teacher:As a former jr high/high school teacher my knee-jerk reaction is to scream YYEEESSSS.
However, this is impractical. The parents are purchasing these phones, so *they* clearly see a need for them. It's something that needs to be assimilated, just like Walkmans (Walkmen?) and Gameboys. You know, it's fine to use a Gameboy during lunch... Rules need to be laid down and strictly enforced. Also, *parents* in a lot of cases need to be made to understand why a cellphone is inappropriate in a classroom.
A big problem we had was that our school day ran late, so many of the kids had Friends that were already out, and would be calling them. Also, in year-round areas, kids from different schools are in and out of the classroom at different times of the year, so again, the kids are getting phone calls often of the HA-HA nature.
It really comes down to policy and parental buy-in. You'll never get parents to agree to a ban, anyway, so educators may as well find a more effective way to cope with the nuisance of cell phones.
TINA STEPHENS(15 years old)-High school Student: Yes. I think that if a child "has to have their 400$ pink razor at their sides" it should be treated like medication. approved by doc. parents. school board.
MARC CUNNINGHAM(18 years old)- UWIStudent: Yes they should be banned in school. Kids go to school to learn, not to play around on a cell phone. There is time for that after school.
SARAH FOSTER(18 years old)-Receptionist: I think it is rude to have them on during class time, but to use them while you are not in class seems fair. And, the school should not be responsible for any lost cell phones. If you are old enough to have a cell phone, you should be old enough to keep it.
KRYSTAL GAYLE(24 years old)-Bar attendant: No they shouldn't, because teens need to inform there parents where they are, or if they need a ride or not. I know I use my cell all the time at school, just not during class. You already took everything else away from us. Let us keep our communication for safety and sociability at least. At least reward us teens that don't abuse cell phone use.
JESSICA YAPP(16 years old)-High school Student: I think they should be allowed but, kept on vibrate or silent. If a student is caught texting, then take it away and give it to the parents. I want my child to be able to call me in the event of an emergency.
cassandra lowe(18 years old)High schoolStudent: I don't think they should be banned from schools, but they should be banned from the classrooms as it is easy to cheat on them from what i've heard in the news. They should leave them in their lockers, and if the teacher catches it with them, get it from the student and give it to the parent at the end of the day and let them know what happened.

being out of school for 2 years now, cell phones were a problem. taking pics of the girls without them knowing, calling and talking to people when classes change, games and internet on the phones. its a distraction. the school i graduated from allowed cell phones to be on the school property but if you used them before school let out that day, then you phone would be taken up and mailed to your parent.
SOBRINA ALLEN(13 years old): High school student: Yes turned off would be good. I think they should be able to carry them but not on during class. Used outside only.
KIRK THOMAS(20 years old)-UWI student: not really because at some point we need it for emergency purposes only, though it is very disturbing when many students use it in the class rooms...very inappropriate!
MY FEEDBACK
A lot of schools ban cell phones because kids use them to make drug deals, to cheat on tests, etc. i don't think it's right to take away a kid's cell phone while they're away from home though. what if something bad happened like 9/11 and they had no way of contacting their family? they're needed in an emergency. if they're worried about kids cheating, the teachers should collect cell phones at the beginning of the test and give them back after. as for drug deals, if it's THAT big of an issue, then bringing in the police and a canine unit and search some kids! i guarantee that after kids see other kids being searched for drugs at school, the deals will be off. Trust me!

Nikeisha is a upper 6th form student at the St.Hugh's High school for girls where she holds many positions. At age 5 while most toddlers were busy exploring the wonders of the world, Nikeisha was already writing stories,poems and most impressively doing karate at the orange belt level. Terry-ann Lee is also an upper 6th form student at the Queens School for girls where she too holds many positions. To name a few, she's the senior prefect and holds many club positions. We had a face to face interview with terry-ann and she basically has the same interst as nikeisha does..no wonder they are friends. She however enjoys playing football,netball and ice-hockey. Terry-ann outlines that in the future she would love to be a medical doctor or an air hostess
