How to connect two PCs so that they can share the internet connection?
I got two PC's both dual-boot, running winXP and Linux. I want to build a LAN so that I can share files and also the net connection. What all do I need for this? If I use a cross-over cable, will I be able to share the internet connection? If so, will both PC's have the same IP address? Or will I need a router to create a subnet? Will a switch serve the purpose?
If you are using only two systems for networking you dont have to use router, swithces or hubs.
What you can do is use p2p sharing. i.e by using a crosswire cable. Make sure that the cable is cross wired perfectly and ask a technician to check the cable by using cable tester.(they have the instrument to check)
Then connect the ends of the cable to NIC of both the systems. Boot both of systems using winXp.
Use one system as master and other system as slave. This can be done by giving the ipaddress of one system as 192.168.0.1 and the other system as 192.168.0.3 and default gateway for slave system as 192.168.0.1.
Now, they both the system must be able to talk to each other.
You can test this by runnig the following command
ping 192.168.0.1 -t
If there is a response, it mean network is successful. Then you can share the internet connection using ICS provided by winxp
