Gas Leak in Fireplace - Plumber?
I live in Southern California. My parents have a gas fireplace, and we smelled gas so we had the Gas Company come out to take a look at it. They told us that gas was indeed leaking and to call a plumber. The guy came out to give us an estimate to replace the on/off valve and to replace the nipple. We will need to patch up the wall and get our own gas log.
My question is:
how much do these types of jobs cost?
Do the plumbers need to have a license to perform gas duties?
How do they check to see if the gas is no longer leaking?
Is there a connective piping and will he not need to replace that as well, or is that normally included?
Btw, I was quoted $450, is that the norm?
re: gas of any kind, I don't want to mess with it at all, lest it blow up when I light it.
I did a lot of research--besides the $450 place, the other places charged $90-$125 for estimates, so thank you to those who were kind enough to take the time to give me a constructive response.
I’d like to add a little something to ( gone’s answer) you will need to shut the gas off at the meter and blow out any pilot lights you may have. Getting to the valve to replace it is the hardest part, the rest is pretty much paper clip (i.e. common stuff.) from the valve you’ll see that you’ll be also replacing the gas pipe that runs out to you fire place log area. Measure the length you need and you can purchase ready made lengths iron pipe threaded both ends just put a cap on the open end to close it off. Then scribe a relatively straight line or just visualize it after it’s installed and tightened and checked for leaks. Use a hack saw to cut ( barely breaking the surface ) holes in the pipe for the gas flames, how fare apart and how many is your call. So you don’t even need to purchase already made ( expensive ) pipe for the burner. This is an easy DIY project and just a little reading and common sense a safe one. No rocket science needed. A thick solution of liquid soap ( or kiddies bubbles ) will show if there are any leaks.
