what must be the smallest possible size of a fish tank if I want to keep a goldfish?
We were gifted a fish-shaped (yes you read it right) tank but it's quite small.
For fancy goldfish I would say 20 to 30 gallons. I have a fancy goldfish and he is 8 yrs old and 8" long without that tail. Hes in a 30g all by himself. Common Goldfish (feeder goldfish) get up to a foot long and the minimum size tank for them is a pond. In other words, I highly doubt a goldfish could thrive in that tank. You might want to consider getting it a filter & heater and getting some red cherry shrimp along with some low-light plants like java fern and java moss. You might not be able to keep fish, but you can still have a nice set-up. Good luck and e-mal me with any other questions.
