Improving Door Security
Doors are the primary entrance and exit points of every home in every country. While making them look welcoming to intended visitors is of the utmost importance to all homeowners, making them look unwelcoming to uninvited guests such as burglars is equally important. All homeowners understand the importance of closing doors and utilizing the locks that they already have, but below are a few additional tips to safeguard doors and the windows that surround them so that they do not attract the wrong type of company. The exterior doors of a house comprise the most important feature of any home security plan, and adequate door security should compliment every home alarm system.
When homeowners (and especially renters, for that matter) move into a new home, the first thing that they should do is change all of the locks. Since it is impossible to know the complete history of a house before moving in, there is no way for new homeowners or renters to know how many keys to the existing locks are in circulation, nor whom may have those keys. Homeowners and renters must install new locks on all doors, as this is the only way to alleviate this problem. The same is true if a family member loses his or her keys – the home security risk of not changing the locks is simply not worth the money saved by failing to do so.
Homeowners should ensure that all doors are secured by deadbolt locks. This is especially true if the primarily lock on a door is a spring-latch lock, as these types of locks can be easily picked, sometimes with nothing more than a credit card or driver’s license. All doors should be equipped with 1-inch throw deadbolt locks, at a minimum. Door frames should be inspected, and rotted wood replaced. Homeowners should also take a look at the gap between the door and its frame when closed; as a significant gap is vulnerable to a door pry. Plywood or sheet metal can be easily added to a door frame to close these gaps.
One of the most common mistakes that homeowners make is to leave door hinges on the outside of a door. In cases such as these, burglars need only pop the hinge pin out of the door hinge, and the door can be immediately (and silently) removed. While resetting doors can be a pain, it is of the utmost importance that door hinges be set on the inside of a door, so doors with exterior hinges must be reset.
Sliding glass doors can be reinforced with a metal pipe, cut to fit the track. The pipe should be laid flat in the track to prevent thieves from forcing the door open. Sensors that detect the breaking of glass should be placed on glass doors to sound an alarm should an intruder attempt to shatter a door. Likewise, glass panels or windows set within doors should be fortified or outfitted with sensors to detect any attempts to break them. Homeowners should also pay close attention to the windows that are within arm’s reach of door locks, as often time burglars will break a window and manually unlock a door.
About the Author
Once homeowners have secured the doors to their homes, they should compliment these exterior home security measures with interior measures such as an ADT alarm system. With one of the most trusted names in home security, ADT Alarms and strong exterior doors make great partners in securing homes from whatever threats they face.
