4 Things You Must Know About Summer Skincare
1. Summer skin behaves differently from winter skin.
As temperatures rise the way they always do in summer, skin gets oilier. What works in the cold winter months will wreak havoc on summer skin. Winter calls for hydrating skincare, to seal in the moisture and protect you from the harsh, dry, cold weather outside, and dry heated air indoors. When summer comes, it is a different story altogether..
Your favourite nourishing moisturizer which keeps your skin soft and dewy, which makes you look so radiant gives you far different results in summer. As the temperatures rise and your skin produces more oil, your winter skincare can trigger off a pimple breakout in the summer months.
If you can't use your favourite skin care in summer, then what should you use?
2. Go for lighter formulas in summer.
Lighter versions of your favourite skincare products. Instead of cream, go for the lotion version. Instead of milk, go for gel. Move a notch lighter now than what you might use in winter.
If you use a cream cleanser, switch to a milk cleanser or cleansing lotion.
If you use a milk or lotion, a gel based cleanser or facial wash may be better for your now oilier skin. Get a cleanser that can effective get rid of the dirt trapped in the excess oil your skin may now produce. Maybe a facial soap might suit you best if your skin gets oily in summer.
Likewise if you use a cream to moisturize your face, now is the time to switch to a lotion. If you use a milk or lotion, you might want to switch to a gel, water-based or oil free moisturizer to avoid adding more oil than your skin now needs.
When it comes to your weekly mask, a hydrating mask may be too rich for you. You might switch to a deep cleansing mask instead. Then again, if you had to use a hydrating mask every day, you might get the same results with that hydrating mask once a week.
3. Watch your pores.
With oilier skin comes a greater need to care for your pores. Keep them clean and unplugged at all times. Acne begins with a clogged pore. Oil mixed with dirt and dead skin cells clog up your pores if you aren't careful. That clogged up pore becomes the perfect breeding place for acne, and that's where the problem becomes. Acne bacteria breeds and spreads and pretty soon, you've got a major acne problem.
Prevent that by using a mask weekly to unclog your pores. Wash your face, use a scrub, then apply a clay mask as necessary. Use only non-comedogenic skincare products or skincare meant for oily skin if you face gets shiny by noon.
4. Always use a sunblock during the day.
Although you should use SPF all year round (especially if where you live, the sun shines in winter too) in summer, it is all the more crucial. Your day moisturizer should have sun protection. Preferably spf15.
Likewise, go light with your foundation. Your usual makeup may look too harsh, too thick, in summer's harsh light. You might even want to skip foundation and use a tinted moisturizer if your skin is clear enough. Actually, your best bet for summer is a tinted moisturizer with sunblock. By that I mean a tinted moisturizer that has a spf 15 for sun protection.
That is so much lighter than foundation, giving you just the right coverage for summer. On top of that, the spf15 acts as a sunblock to protect your skin from the sun. As a moisturizer, it nourishes and protects your skin. All that in just one application, vs 3 if you were to layer a moisturizer, sunblock and foundation and risk looking overdone in summer.
