Toddler Reins

My son is only 13 months, but has been walking since 10 months and is an excellent walker/runner now. He hates going in his pushchair, and I'm happy to slow down in order to let him walk a little, but he isn't yet capable of walking WITH me... he walks towards exciting things, or back the way we just came, or down peoples driveways etc! He doesn't want to hold hands (he pulls away in frustration) and I've tried a harness/reins, but he hates those too. Basically, it's not a case of walking slower, we just don't get anywhere!

For now, I'm putting him in the pushchair, but letting him out wherever possible (like at the park or at the aquarium).

I know he's still quite young to be walking everywhere... but he seems to prefer it.

When are toddlers usually able to walk with a parent at least the majority of the time?

I guess it's the concept of getting from A to B rather than walking to explore, which is what he does now...
